U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said Wednesday he wants to talk directly with Toyota (TM: 73.4, -4.66, -5.97%) chairman and CEO Akio Toyoda about the company’s ongoing accelerator problems, but stepped back from earlier statements that owners should stop driving the vehicles under recall.

LaHood, when asked a question about Toyota at a Congressional appropriations subcommittee hearing Wednesday, said owners need to “stop driving it, take it to a dealer because they believe they have a fix for it.”

Big Recall Dept.: Toyota (TM: 73.4, -4.66, -5.97%) suspended sales of eight vehicle models, including the Camry, RAV4, Matrix, Corolla, Sequoia, Tundra, Avalon, and Highlander, as a recall was issued last week for accelerator pedals that could be faulty. The auto maker is also suspending production at its U.S. and Canadian manufacturing plants.
