The Vatican on Friday defended the fast-track canonization process of two former popes, agreeing that the procedure is unusual but saying that saint-making is “not exactly a democratic process.”

The Catholic Church will elevate two popes this Sunday to sainthood in a historic dual ceremony. Pope John XXIII served from 1958 to 1963; the 27-year papacy of Pope John Paul II ended upon his death in 2005. Some have questioned why the Vatican sped the canonization process for John Paul, allowing the procedure to begin immediately upon his death instead of observing a typical five-year waiting period.

Vatican spokesman Greg Burke said the enormous outpouring of support for John Paul II helped speed up the canonization effort.

“That’s part of the saint-making process. It’s not exactly a democratic process but people do vote with their feet,” he said Friday on TODAY.

Burke said that that while the process for John Paul II may have proceeded faster than others, “rush is an opinionated word there, because there are things that have actually happened faster.” He also pointed out that Pope Emeritus Benedict, whom he described as “one of the most conservative popes in the world,” was the person who waived the five-year waiting period for his predecessor.

“I think that’s one sign that we’re pretty safe,” he said.

Both former popes will be declared saints in a ceremony led by the current pontiff. Pope Francis also waived another Vatican rule, in this case the need for proof that Pope John had performed two miracles instead of one.

17. Уверовавших же будут сопровождать сии знамения: именем Моим будут изгонять бесов; будут говорить новыми языками;

MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (AP) — Jamie Coots, a snake-handling Kentucky pastor who appeared on the National Geographic television reality show “Snake Salvation,” died Saturday after being bitten by a snake.
Coots was handling a rattlesnake during a Saturday night service at his Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name Church in Middlesboro when he was bit, another preacher, Cody Winn, told WBIR-TV (
“Jamie went across the floor. He had one of the rattlers in his hand, he came over and he was standing beside me. It was plain view, it just turned its head and bit him in the back of the hand … within a second,” Winn said.
When an ambulance arrived at the church at 8:30 p.m., they were told Coots had gone home, the Middlesboro Police Department said in a news release. Contacted at his house, Coots refused medical treatment.
Emergency workers left about 9:10 p.m. When they returned about an hour later, Coots was dead from a venomous snake bite, police said.
In January 2013, Coots was caught transporting three rattlesnakes and two copperheads through Knoxville, Tenn. Wildlife officials confiscated the snakes, and Coots pleaded guilty to illegally wildlife possession. He was given one year of unsupervised probation.
Coots said then he needed the snakes for religious reasons, citing a Bible passage in the book of Mark that reads, in part: “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”
Coots said he took the passage at face value.
“We literally believe they want us to take up snakes,” Coots told The Associated Press in February 2013. “We’ve been serpent handling for the past 20 or 21 years.”
After he was bitten Saturday night, Coots dropped the snakes, but then picked them back up and continued on. Within minutes, Winn said Coots headed to the bathroom.
His son, Cody, told the television station his dad had been bit eight times before, but never had such a severe reaction. Cody Coots said he thought the bite would be just like all the others.
“We’re going to go home, he’s going to lay on the couch, he’s going to hurt, he’s going to pray for a while and he’s going to get better. That’s what happened every other time, except this time was just so quick and it was crazy, it was really crazy,” Cody Coots said

National Geographic television

A Catholic claim follows: “It was the Roman Catholic church that changed the Sabbath from Saturday, the seventh day of the week, to Sunday, the first day, and at the council of Laodicea, we anathematized those who kept the Sabbath, and urged all persons to labor on the seventh day of the week under penalty of anathema,” — Father Enright, Catholic Priest, deceased, Kansas City, Missouri from a lecture at Harlan, Iowa, published in the Harlan Weekly Paper.

From “Faith of Our Fathers,” by Cardinal Gibbons, page 89, edition of 1917, we glean the following illuminating information, as to Rome’s attitude toward the Holy Scriptures:

“A rule of faith, or a competent guide to heaven, must be able to instruct all the truths necessary for salvation. Now the Scriptures alone do not contain all the truths which a Christian is bound to believe, nor do they explicitly enjoin all the duties which he is obliged to practice. Not to mention other examples, is not every Christian obliged to sanctify Sunday and to abstain on that day from unnecessary servile work? Is not the observance of this law among the most promising of our sacred duties? But you may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find a single line authorizing the sanctification of Sunday. The Scriptures enforce the religious observance of Saturday, a day which we never sanctify.”

William James, in his “Sermons on the Sacraments and Sabbath,” pp. 122, 123, says, “When the practice of keeping Saturday Sabbaths, which had become so general at the close of this century (the fourth), was evidently gaining ground in the Eastern church, a decree was passed in the Council of Laodicea (A.D. 364), `That members of the church should not rest from work on the Sabbath like Jews.'”
