Doodles

Poodle crosses, more commonly known as “doodles”, have been around since the first cocker-poo litter made its way into the local newspaper. And not all crosses involve Poodles either. Enter the “puggle”, a Pug and Beagle mix that were all the rage back around 2004.

But why make these crosses? People have either deliberately or accidentally cross-bred various combinations for years, but in the past, had the decency not to advertise them for large sums of money. Today, these are star attractions in the daily classifieds, and are being fraudulently touted as “purebred”, with “registration papers” to boot.

The sales pitch is clear; you can get the best of two or more breeds by crossing them to make a hybrid that will most certainly be healthier and more intelligent than any of the contributors. Such dogs are touted as strange, exotic, quite rare, and are worth a small fortune. That is, if you subscribe to the concept that being “rare” always equates to high value. The truth is that while the Hope diamond is both singularly unique and incalculably expensive, the Ford Pinto is also rare, but you would be hard pressed to find anyone to pay anything for one of them.
